These portraits were made at the 27th Street School, just before its closing in 2006-7. I’d been invited there by an old friend of mine, my daughter’s 4th grade teacher Doug Smith who, now retired, was volunteering his time to conduct restorative justice “Circles” in the public schools. He was at 27th Street because a teacher, a former student, had called, desperate for some help with the constant disruption in her classroom. Doug developed a group, The Angry Boys Club he called it, and taught them how to listen to others, how to talk themselves and express their feelings, and how not to get into a fight.
