Join the Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) in welcoming legendary artist/filmmaker/photographer Dick Blau, who will discuss his exciting new photography work, In Search of the Ecstatic: Journeys in Music and Culture.
Best known for Thicker Than Water, Blau’s longstanding study of familial emotion now on display at the Haggerty and Wisconsin Museum/s of Art, Blau will introduce us to another – and very different – body of work. Away from home, Blau has photographed the public expression of feeling in music and dance, producing four books and a film on gestures of celebration in various cultures. His subjects have varied widely from African American gospel and Polish American polka and then farther afield to the Romani music of Greek Macedonia and a Dionysian carnival on the remote island of Skyros.
A founder of the Film Department at UWM, Blau’s interests range from psychological portraiture to experimental narrative, from ethnography to performance. He works in photography, film, video and occasionally as an actor. His students’ films have won many awards, among them the grand Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and First Prize for Experimental Film at the Harvard Black Festival. One of them, American Movie by Chris Smith (MFA 1999), is listed by the New York Times as one of the 1000 best films ever made.
Free to CoPA members, students, and first time guests.
