Featuring 30 photographs that capture the energy of live polka performances
January 31–March 29, 2015 | Hyde Gallery, The Museum of Wisconsin Art
One of a series of photographs of two ancient Greek seasonal ceremonies involving masked and belled performers dressed in animal skins. One set was made in the Greek Macedonian villages of Kali Vrissi and Nikisiani as part of a collaboration with sound artist Steven Feld and published as a cd and illustrated pamphlet by Smithsonian Folkways. (Bells and Winter Festivals of Greek Macedonia, 2002.) The second set was made in 2004/2006 on the island of Skyros, where the Goat Dance is performed every year to herald and celebrate the coming of Spring. (Skyros Carnival, 2011, voxlox books.) Both sets, along with a DVD by Feld, are presently featured in several group shows opening in Thessaloniki on February 18. The shows run through March 25th.
